FOR THE DYING MUST STICK TOGETHER
Poem By: Billy Alsbrooks

Withering tree with no more purpose
You stand there with such firmness
As the cold of January makes me question everything
I envy you
_________________________________________
If we could all wear your level of truth on our branches
Wave with the same level of honesty
Unashamed of the missing leaves
And yet still find some way to stand upright
_________________________________________
Underneath what’s left of your shade
You map the days
You set the example for all of us to follow
I envy you
Yes
I envy you
_________________________________________
I’m sorry for raping your silence
Raping you for the wood that make the pages I write on
_________________________________________
I promise though
I promise to never waste a line
To never dishonor you by conveying half truths
You deserve more than that
My pencil shall be sacred
And my words shall stay vulnerable
_________________________________________
May our spirits bond
Bond as a poetic child from a dying forest
Let us become a shelter
A safe haven for the birds of tomorrow’s song
_________________________________________
Underneath what’s left of your shade
We shall be the voice
The voice of souls with no mouth
_________________________________________
Introduce me to the wind
Take me to the sky
Whisper my name to the stars
For the dying must stick together
Yes
The dying must stick together…
