THE LAST GUEST TO MY DARKEST PLACE
Poem By: Billy Alsbrooks

From the jump
From the moment the light destroyed the black
The fate of her storm led me away
______________________________________
Before the do-over
Before the second first impression
Sweetness was at the end of my death
______________________________________
Beautiful fools pretending to be ice cream
Neapolitan souls living mixed dreams
I still find pieces of her in my every waking moment
______________________________________
A hundred other girls in a hundred other worlds
None could find a happy death
None could find a deeper breath
We drowned in a desert of hope
______________________________________
As the words were spoken
The gate of stars opened
And all of heaven sung your name
______________________________________
Under currents in a dry river bed
Questions burning from the soft words you said
Our waves the answer in a world still guessing
______________________________________
A million lessons
I’m grateful
A million lessons
______________________________________
Our bed full of contradictions
Minor people with major issues
I board the circus train to hear your confessions
______________________________________
A million blessings
I’m grateful
A million blessings
______________________________________
Anything is possible in an age of anxiety
The space between us and the gap between society
Hold the candle as if I was still yours
Hold the candle as if I was still yours
______________________________________
You are the last guest to my darkest place
When will mercy again show her face
I guess my guilt is just too much for your innocence
______________________________________
You promised to never leave me
But being this close is killing me
For our love is the house at the bottom of the sea
______________________________________
Bury the dead so our lips can live again
Rob the world so we’ll have something to give again
I am the silent scream no one heard
______________________________________
A double life in a single room
Lovers lucky enough to live on a dying moon
Hold the candle as if I was still yours
Hold the candle as if I was still yours
The last guest to my darkest place…
