DANCING OUT OF CHARACTER (Poem By Billy Alsbrooks)

DANCING OUT OF CHARACTER

Poem By: Billy Alsbrooks

________________________________________

Dying under the influence

Chained to moments I never signed up for

I seem to be dancing

Dancing out of character

________________________________________

I sit in strange chairs

Eat from modern tables

Yet my mistakes are so traditional

________________________________________

Bitter

Still I cling to the arms of yesterday

So you’ll have to forgive me

Forgive me for the trauma that you caused

This isn’t me

No

This definitely isn’t me

________________________________________

Your hand gestures elegant

Your presence violent

But it’s my regret that beats me

________________________________________

Still

Still I strum broken strings

Still

Still I sit behind a smashed piano,

In search of the right key to die in

________________________________________

Am I intoxicated?

Or have I finally gone mad?

Either way,

The demons demand their recognition

________________________________________

Stop lying!

For once in this relationship would you just be honest with me?

What happened?

What really happened that you’re too afraid to tell me?

________________________________________

What did you do?

Stop lying!!

What did you do??

________________________________________

In unfamiliar territory

Doing things without my consent

I seem to be dancing

Dancing out of character

Dying under the influence

I seem to be dancing

Dancing out of character

________________________________________

Stop lying!!!

What happened??

What did you do???

What did you do????
